We were extremely saddened to receive the tragic news of the death of recent NYT member Chris Greenwood last week. Chris was a member of National Youth Theatre in the 2000s and we are proud that he was part of several of our productions, including the original production of James Graham’s critically acclaimed Tory Boyz at Soho Theatre in 2008 (pictured here) and our co-production of Fastburn with Kneehigh Theatre in 2009.
We remember him with respect and fondness, not least because he showed great sensitivity, instinct, warmth, integrity and of course talent. I am afraid to say that during my involvement in the National Youth Theatre this is not the first or indeed likely to be the last time a very talented young man will have decided to have taken his own life. We must all redouble our efforts to support those suffering from mental health problems. Our thoughts are with Chris’ family and friends at this very difficult time.
The NYT Chris Greenwood Bursary has been set up by Chris’ family and friends in his memory. The Bursary will provide support to those young people who face financial hardship, which would otherwise prevent them from taking part in our life-changing opportunities. More here:
Donations are also being made to CALM. THE CAMPAIGN AGAINST LIVING MISERABLY, or CALM, is a registered charity, which exists to prevent male suicide in the UK. More here.
