Overview

New to 2019, we introduce the National Youth Theatre's Members' Programme. A series of free creative workshops and opportunities or current National Youth Theatre members* to get involved in. 

Below you'll find the latest members workshops and opportunities. Not see anything you fancy, check back in as new events and workshops are added regularly. 

*A select number of free creative workshops will also be open to general booking for young people aged 14-25, following a priority booking process for NYT Members (Company Members and Club Members).


April 2019


Spoken Word and Performance with Jemima Foxtrot *

Saturday 27 April, London 

Join NYT Alumna and writer, theatre-maker and performer Jemima Foxtrot for a practical workshop exploring how spoken word poetry and performance interact.

Storytelling and Spoken Word Poetry with Deanna Rodger * 
Part of Spoken World
Sunday 5 May, Bristol 

Interested in getting started with poetry? This practical and dynamic workshop from NYT Alumna and international writer, performer and facilitator Deanna Rodger introduces you to how Spoken Word can be used as a tool for storytelling.

Submit an original piece of poetry in response to the theme 'The Countdown to Save Our World' and be in with the chance of performing with NYT at Latitude Festival. Open to National Youth Theatre Company Members only. 


Gaining Confidence in Comedy with Ste Johnston * 
Saturday 25 May, Manchester

Fancy yourself as a bit of a comedian, or always felt that comedy’s what’s missing from your acting toolkit? Join actor, funny man, and NYT Associate Ste Johnston (No Offence, Channel 4) for a half day workshop on techniques to help you be more confident in comedy whether its performing it or for monologue technique?

Creative Producing with Tobi Kyeremateng *

Ever thought about producing your own theatre show? How about your own event or festival? This practical workshop takes you through all the fundamentals of producing - from exploring exactly what a producer is, through to fundraising for your idea and delivering your project!

Mindfullness Session with Brenda Shankey *
18 June, National Youth Theatre Rehearsal Rooms, Studio Space, London

Pursuing theatre whether on stage or off stage can be a full on experience. Join us at the NYT Studio space for a session with London’s top mindset mindfulness coach, Brenda Shankey. Brenda is runnning a session to motivate, inspire, influence confidence, give coping techniques for anxiety, nerves, panic, fear, worries and sleeplessness plus much more. 

La Merde by Roberta Livingston, Play Reading 
20 June, National Youth Theatre Rehearsal Rooms, Studio Space, London

As part of the NYT Members' Takeover at NYT's Holloway Road studio space, we'll be hosting a play reading of La Merde, a brand new play by NYT Member Roberta Livingston

La Merde is a punchy dynamic play that exposes the colourism within the beauty industry.

Join writer Yolanda Mercy, directed Lakesha Arie-Angelo and members of the 2019 National Youth Theatre Playing Up Company for a short post show Q+A, discussing the story behind Summer Fest, and the experience of being part of NYT’s Playing Up course. 

Improvisation in Drama with Rachael Walsh
Sunday 14 July, 1-5pm 

Yorkshire Dance, Leeds 

Join National Youth Theatre at Yorkshire Dance for a free workshop, open to National Youth Theatre members and local young people aged 14-25 with Rachael Walsh 

Build your confidence in improvisation skills and challenge yourself with this four hour masterclass. This workshop will cover basic improv skills including building platforms, creating characters, playing short-form games and exploring different improv formats.

Playwriting and Storytelling with Luke Barnes

14-25 and enjoy telling stories? Join award-winning Formby playwright Luke Barnes, for a free Playwriting and Storytelling workshop. Whatever your experience level, this interactive workshop will give you the tools to kickstart your writing and start piecing together an original play - whether it be epic, domestic, disruptive, lyrical, comic or something else entirely

It’s not all about comedy: Improvisation and acting in the moment with Lauren O’Rourke

Many people have a preconceived idea that improv is ‘saying something funny’ - we look to explore and dispel this myth and work on how improvisation can help the actor to be more in the moment.

An Introduction to Theatre Criticism with Ava Wong Davies

Spotlight, London

Always wanted to figure out how best to put your thoughts about theatre into words? This workshop with award-winning critic Ava Wong Davies, will give you the tools to get started in theatre criticism. 

Open to NYT Members and Spotlight members aged 14-25 only. 

Followed by a Performance of A Midsummer Night's Dream at The Criterion Theatre

An Introduction to Voice Work with Rebecca Cuthbertson

Learn how to release your voice with this interactive workshop exploring the basics of voice work in performance. From physical work to breathing, projection to articulation, this session will work to offer you an essential toolkit to help you best use your voice.

Clowning and Improvisation with Paul Charlton

Speaking Shakespeare with Tom Wright

Not sure where to start with Shakespeare? Find the idea of speaking classical texts daunting? This free drama workshop will explore ways to speak Shakespeare's verse regardless of your past experience, focusing on physical and emotional elements.

An Introduction to screen acting and self taping with Katy Carmichael

Get involved in this one off workshop exploring the basics of screen acting and self tape audition technique. Join actor and director Katy Carmichael as she takes you through the world of preparing for a screen audition with tips and tricks for nailing the transition from stage to screen.
