This week at NYT | Time's running out to be our next Bryan Forbes Assistant Director!

Posted 29 Jul 2023 by Joe Duggan

We’re entering the last few weeks of our 2018 Auditions and Backstage Interviews national roadshow – but there’s still lots more to get involved with at NYT!

Join NYT in 2018

There are now just a handful of spaces left on our 2018 Auditions, with some of our final auditions taking place in Bexhill on Sea, Swansea, Bournemouth and London this weekend.

Still hoping to join NYT in 2018? Don’t worry, you can still apply for our Backstage summer courses! If you’re interested in finding out more about theatre, getting involved in one of our summer courses specialising in costume, lighting, sound, stage management or scenic construction could be a great option for you.

Sign up for one of our backstage interviews now!

Bryan Forbes Assistant Director Bursary

There’s just over a week left to apply to be our 2018 Bryan Forbes Assistant Director!

Are you under 30, and an NYT member or alumni? Looking to kick start a directing career, and want to train alongside our 2018 REP Company and direct your own production with NYT. Apply for our Bryan Forbes Assistant Director Bursary which offers one emerging director the chance to train with NYT, supported by a £10,000 bursary.

Cr18 Member Takeover

Following the success of 50 plays in a day in 2017, we’re looking for a group of inquisitive NYT members to work with us to develop a new project in response to the centenary of the end of the First World War. The project, titled ‘Cr18’, will be based on the idea of Creative Conscription, which will involve young people being voluntarily ‘conscripted’ to create digital performance in response to creative stimuli set by high profile artists.

We’re looking for young creative producers, digital storytellers, performers, writers, directors and designers to help us pilot this new idea. If selected you’ll be taking over a space for a week or weekend with other NYT members to create a response to a creative brief delivered each morning!

Get involved!

Playing Up – Schools Tour

This week has seen the first dress rehearsal of our 2017/18 Playing Up Company’s brand new Schools Tour, supported by the L&Q Foundation. Snakes and Ladders by Rebecca Manley will be performed at schools in Newham, Lewisham and Waltham Forest.

Want to be a part of our 2018/19 Playing Up Company? Applications are still open to join this unique free training course, offering young people aged 19 - 24 who are not in Education Employment or Training the opportunity to gain an Access to Higher Education Diploma in Theatre Arts.

Spring Season

Our Spring Season at the Southwark Playhouse is fast approaching. Next week rehearsals kick off in a couple of weeks for James Fritz’s The Fall!

If you want to get £12 tickets for The Fall you only have a week left to take part in The Fall survey and receive an exclusive discount code! The survey takes around 5 minutes to fill in and explores the topics of housing, loneliness, and end of life care also explored in the play.

Rehearsals also get started soon for Dennis Kelly’s DNA. Some dates have already sold out so pre-booking is essential if you want to catch us at Southwark Playhouse in May.

We’re delighted to be able to announce the cast for this year’s production!

If you’re a school group we’re also offering the chance to book a workshop around the show at your school.

Batley and Spen

Last week we ran free auditions in Batley and Spen at an amazing Youth Theatre set up in memory of Jo Cox MP !
