Posted 29 Jul 2023 by Joe Duggan

It's been a full on week at NYT with our members and alumni getting involved in a whole load of events and shows.

The REP Season

The 2017 REP Season at Ambassadors Theatre is going from strength to strength with a whole load of glowing press reviews. Check them all out here!

Othello

★★★★ "visually arresting" - The Stage

★★★★★ "a knockout performance" - Plays to See

Jekyll and Hyde

★★★★ "bold, relevant" - The Stage

★★★★½ "remarkable" - Upstaged Arts

It was onto the next project for our REP Company, as the first read through kicked off rehearsals for Mrs Dalloway, directed by Thomas Bailey, recipient of the Bryan Forbes Assistant Bursary scheme who has been working with the REP Company throughout the year! Playing Up

Our Playing Up course members have been getting into the swing of things down at our Holloway Road rehearsal rooms. This week they’ve enjoyed a session with the Monobox, a trip to see Wings at the Young Vic, and today have a session with NYT Associate and actress Cathy Owen.

Masterclasses

Our October half-term masterclasses kick off on Monday in Manchester, London and Norwich. Not got any plans for half term? The last few spaces are available for booking, so snap up one of the last slots.

Our masterclasses are open to everyone aged 15-25 – you don’t have to be an NYT Member!

Theatre Craft 2017

We’re thrilled to say that in two weeks time we’ll be heading down to Theatre Craft to meet a whole host of young people and introduce them to our courses!

TheatreCraft is the biggest non-performance careers event in London. It’s FREE and open to anyone aged 16-25 and offers you the chance to:

  • Take part in Workshops led by theatre professionals
  • Explore the vibrant Marketplace packed with leading theatres and education providers
  • Get one-to-one careers advice in our Stage Your Career zone
  • Meet high profile, influential people in the industry

Get involved!

Act for Change

On Thursday we headed down to the Act for Change ‘Widening the Lens’ debate at the National Theatre, in association with The Stage. We loved getting involved in the debate which centred on diversity in theatre and criticism, and loved seeing some NYT Members there too!

Co-chaired by Baroness Shami Chakrabarti (Shadow Attorney General) and Alistair Smith (Editor of The Stage), the event included a keynote speech from Grace LaDoja (Director, manager to Grime artist, Skepta) as well as panellists from Matthew Xia (Theatre Director, Associate Artistic Director at Manchester Royal Exchange) to Lyn Gardner (Guardian Theatre Critic, Writer & Journalist).

Whither Would You Go

We’re delighted to be involved in the Whither Would You Go charity gala, at the Harold Pinter Theatre this Sunday, where all money from the box office will be going to UNHCR refugee relief.

As well as a number of our current members taking to the stage, NYT Patron Prasanna Puwanarajah and NYT Alumna Susan Wokoma are performing.

In support of refugees worldwide, a host of stars will gather to perform scenes from Shakespeare in response to modern-day refugee stories.

Tickets are just £20 today (Friday 20th) if you’d like to attend!

Alumni / Member News

NYT Alumnus and Patron Chiwetel Ejiofor has started production on his adaptation of 'The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind' — backed by Participant Media, BBC Films and the BFI — which is he directing and starring in.

Congrats to NYT Member Adrianna Bertola who has been cast in The Twilight Zone, at the Almeida Theatre.

Itch and Scratch, launched by NYT Alumni, have announced 'GREAT' BRITAIN, a night of new writing and top entertainment, curated by Itch + Scratch and directed by Matt Harrison at the Hackney Showroom.

The cast includes Alice Vilanculo, from the 2016/17 Playing Up company.

Also from the 2016/17 Playing Up company Rachel Moore and Michaela Mckenzie are currently appearing in Alistair Wilkinson’s (NYT) ‘Man Cub’ at King’s Head Theatre.

NYT Alumna Paula Wilcox is currently performing in What Shadows at the Park Theatre

And finally....

Finally, today we say a sad farewell to our Auditions and Courses Manager Sophie George-Moore, and our Assistant Producer Kay Hudson who have both been working for NYT for a number of years, and will both be massively missed. Good luck with your next adventures Sophie and Kay! Sending lots of NYT love.
