MadeByMembers - Pitch your project
Want to curate your own Made by Members series and put it on at our Holloway Road building in North London this year, at another venue in the UK or online?
We are looking for an enthusiastic Hub Member or small group of Hub members to premiere their own Made By Members project in our recently redeveloped building, in the Workshop Theatre, at another venue in the UK or Online to a live-streamed audience!
About Made By Members Projects
Born from a number of member-led new writing scratch nights (including Rush, curated by Shakira Newton, and Mixtape, curated by Nathan Whitebrook) Made by Members gives a Company Member (or small group of NYT Members) the chance to curate a performance evening around a theme, performance type, or stimulus.
As the curator you would provide the stimulus, manage submissions, select performers, arrange any necessary rehearsals, and then host the performance evening which will be live-streamed online. Previous sessions have focused on new music, spoken word poetry, short films, sketch comedy, and performances by Black actors.

Guidelines
Performances should consist of original content* and have a clear theme
*Due to copyright laws around public performance, performances should be original, or of material not restricted by copyright laws - for example extracts from Shakespeare would be fine.
Performers can be NYT Company Members and HUB Subscribers
How it works?
Submit your application
If successful, the curator(s) then selects performers for their Made by Members project and plans any rehearsals that may be necessary. This includes designing the poster, creating application forms and reviewing applications. Producing the event, alongside NYT Staff and being the main point of contact for NYT & Hub Members participating.
The performance takes place at our Holloway Road building, an agreed location or online!
FREE Backstage Interviews
Booking is now open for interviews to become a Backstage Member in 2023
Interviews will take place in-person at our Creative Production House in north London and online via Zoom. You must be 16 years-old to interview. In person interviews will involve a morning workshop followed by an individual interview in the afternoon.
Successful applicants will be invited to take part in a Backstage Summer Course in Costume, Lighting, Scenic Construction, Sound or Stage Management. Summer Courses will take place at Rose Bruford College in Kent and accommodation will be available to book.
Book your interview: Book a date that suits you and we’ll confirm a individual time slot for your online interview or if you’re interview in person you’ll need to be there all morning and until you’ve completed your individual interview in the afternoon.
What do I need to prepare? Bring an example of any of your previous creative work - it could be art work, storyboard, plot sheet photo - come prepared to talk about Theatre, TV or Film that interested you and what you liked about it

Rush is back | Make your West End debut.
This will be an hour of performance & fun PLUS a chance to meet other members at NYT's first-ever, UP ALL NIGHT takeover of the Duke Of Yorks Theatre in the heart of the West End! We are inviting NYT Members to perform original work, or submit original work for another member to perform at the Duke Of York Theatre in London on Friday 10th February - Saturday 11th February 2023 to a live audience. You will be expected for at least 2 hours during this time - this will be confirmed if you are selected. If you have any questions, please email naila.barrett@nyt.org.uk
Submissions include Spoken Word, song, rap etc.
We’d love to hear your responses to the theme ‘up all night’. This could be what you think about when you should be asleep, what keeps you up all night, insomnia or overworking, or any stories you might want to share around the stimulus. All pieces submitted MUST be surrounding the theme of 'Up All Night'.
Whilst all will be welcome to attend the performance, please note submissions are only open to Black NYT Members - defined as Black African, Caribbean, Afro-Latinx and African-American heritage, including those of mixed-Black heritage who identify as such.

Q&A | Network, Ask and Meet!
On Friday 28th October 2022 at 6:30pm we will be hosting an industry panel at our Holloway Road building in North London for a live audience of NYT Members and HUB Subscribers!
This Q&A will be hosted by Membership and Communications Coordinator, Naila Barrett. Join us as we find out what it takes to be successful in this industry, how to bounce back after a 'no' and why becoming an overnight success takes years.

MADE BY MEMBERS
For the first time, we are opening up our Made by Members series to our HUB Subscribers. Our Made by Members series is curated by Members, based on different themes. Previous examples include Rush - A showcase of Black Talent, Mixtape - An evening of original music, Culture Shock, An online series for those of two or more cultures, Speak Out - A series curated to champion LGBTQ+ voices with a specific focus on Trans Healthcare and much more.

Monologue Night is BACK!
Monologue Night is a Made by Members' series showcasing NYT talent both in-person and online.
In-Person Event:
This event will be a fun chance to meet new members, perform original work to a live audience and have fun!
We are inviting NYT Members to perform original work, or submit original work for another member to perform at our Holloway Road building in North London on Saturday 16th July 2022 to a live audience.
There are no restrictions to these monologues, so please be as creative as you'd like! However, the maximum time limit is three minutes in length.
You must be available from 1pm - 9pm.
How does the day work?
You will be joined by an NYT associate artist, who will run a warm-up and games, work through the chosen monologues with the group and offer creative guidance. This is a great opportunity to perform your own work or see your writing performed on a stage to a live audience in a safe and welcoming environment.
The performance will begin at 7pm and end at 9pm. There will be an interval and musical act & a host - so this evening is sure to be fun!
You must be aged 18-25 to take part.

Will I meet the other NYT members before the event?
On Tuesday 12th July 2022, 6:30pm-7:30pm, we are holding an optional pre-meet on Zoom for all members selected to meet with each other, socialise and ask any questions they may have about the day. This is a great way to find out more about the event and make friends before you come along to the event!
Can I invite casting directors and agents to come and watch me?
You are welcome to invite whoever you like to come and watch you! However, this is an informal scratch night and lots of people will be trying out new and exciting work. For any further information, please contact Membership and Communications Coordinator, Naila Barrett on naila.barrett@nyt.org.uk.
Will there be a programme?
We will be providing a cast sheet and summary of each monologue to audience members.
Someone I want to attend, can't attend. Will it be recorded?
Monologue Night will be recorded, however this is for NYT's archives and will not be distrubuted among cast or audiences.
How can I book to come and watch?
The event will be available to purchase FREE tickets from the 1st July 2022.
I've already performed in a Monologue Night, can I apply again?
Yes, Monologue Night is open to all Members aged 18-25.

ROOTS | CREATIVE WORKSHOPS
Roots is a new Made by Members' series, exploring mixed heritage identity curated by NYT Member and Nouveau Riche Associate Artist, Ilayda McIntosh.
Roots is series of online workshops exploring the lived experiences of the mixed-heritage community.
Through various theatre-based exercises, conversations and activities, each group will explore what it means to be of mixed heritage, how this shapes and informs who we are, as well as how we then navigate the wider world.
Open to mixed heritage individuals of all ages.
The first in-person session is open to applicants.

Kinship | Made by Members
Creating a space celebrating young creative people in Scotland and the North of England.
Kinship is a project which aims to unite and celebrate cultural identities within the arts from members who consider themselves Scottish or North-English. The project will discuss topics such as cultural identity, location, and transport links with the intention to create in-person opportunity for NYT members to perform and creative ideas that are born from these discussions. NYT members and HUB subscribers aged 16-25 - come along! Kinship is curated by Daniel Langley.

Safe Space, curated by Mollie Neal | Applications Open!
Safe Space is open to both HUB and NYT members - it is an evening of performance, community and reflection.
In the latest of our Made by Members’ series, Safe Space has been crafted specifically for those performing to feel supported and help create a sense of community for those who have experienced a loss, grief or any life-changing event and would like to showcase this through a creative medium.
Safe Space Premieres to a live audience on Wednesday 9th March at National Youth Theatre’s, North London home.

MIXTAPE is back with MIXTAPE: Social! on Saturday 5th March at the National Youth Theatre's Creative Hub in North London, curated by Nathan Whitebrook! As part of the Made by Member's series, MIXTAPE is hosting an evening of sound and socialising, and everyone is invited!
If you are a HUB or NYT member and would like the chance to perform at the live event, please submit your original music, songwriting, rap, or spoken word to the form below by the 25th of February 2022.
We're inviting you to submit your existing work OR to respond to the theme of loneliness and/or togetherness.
Based outside London? Thanks to funding from the DCMS Loneliness Fund, distance is no obstacle! We will be offering travel bursaries to successful applicants, who need support with getting to the venue! If you aren't able to perform this time around, Mixtape will be going on the road soon!
If you are selected for this project, you must be avaliable for the full day.

Offshore, Curated by Marisol Spensieri | Applications Open!
Submissions are now open for Offshore, an in-person Made by Members event celebrating migrant performers at NYT's Workshop Theatre on Friday 11th March to a live audience. Curated and hosted by NYT member Marisol Spensieri, the event will showcase young migrant talent.
You can submit any original piece (poems, music, monologues, duologues or dance/movement) as long as live performance is at its heart. We welcome all topics and the pieces can be in English, your own language or multilingual.
Please note this is a call-out for first generation migrants or refugees living in the UK, as this is an opportunity to showcase groups that are currently underrepresented or misrepresented in the industry.
You will need to be available on Friday 11th March from 2pm to 6.30pm.
The performance will take place from 5pm - 6:30pm
To apply, please submit a self-tape of yourself performing the piece/s (max. 6 minutes) and a written copy if applicable.

Led by National Youth Theatre Associate Artist and director of our 2018 production of DNA, Sean Hollands. In these workshops, explore character and themes in Dennis Kelly's DNA through key exercises and games to support your understanding and knowledge of the play.
Exploring Shakspeare's classic play Macbeth
Led by Olivia Dowd and Isabel Adomakoh Young - National Youth Theatre REP Company Alumni and cast members in our 2018 production of Macbeth at the Garrick Theatre. Develop your understanding of Shakespearean language, iambic pentameter and character intentions in this classic text.
Explore your Voice and Vocal Techniques
Have an audition coming up and want to explore vocal techniques to prepare? Or want to exapnd you toolkit for vocal exercises to use in the virtual classroom with your students? Whether you're devising a play with a group or creating your own work you'll discover a toolkit of exercises to generate original material. Explore the topic of stimulus and get creative with devising games and writing prompts.
