Interested in drama and a career in the creative industries?

Applications are open for our Emerge programme, running in September 2022!

Emerge is a unique, free month-long drama and careers programme for young people aged 16–25 who are currently unemployed and not in education, and are based in an East London borough.

Workshops will take place twice weekly and will be run by an NYT Associate Artist at our partner venues in our priority boroughs of Barking & Dagenham, Greenwich and Newham, and at the National Youth Theatre in Islington, with travel bursaries provided.

You will develop your ambitions and professional toolkit with twice weekly workshops, one-to-one mentoring, and bespoke CV and interview guidance across 4 weeks.

Emerge offers participants a clear and transparent breakdown of routes into the creative industries and key skills, with the programme culminating in a Careers Fair at the National Youth Theatre.

Places are available to NYT Members and non-NYT Members who live in the East London boroughs of Barking & Dagenham*, Bexley, Bromley, Enfield, Greenwich*, Havering, Newham*, Redbridge or Waltham Forest.

When and where does Emerge happen?

Emerge runs for 4 weeks, from 5th September – 28th September 2022. Each week you will have two 3-hour workshops.

Each week the first workshop of each week will take place at your borough group’s partner venue:

Newham group: Mondays, 10.30am–1.30pm, at Applecart Arts (Plashet Grove)

Barking & Dagenham group: Mondays, 2.30pm–5.30pm, at Studio 3 Arts (Barking)

Greenwich group: Tuesday, 10am–1pm, at Woolwich Works (Woolwich)

The second workshop of each week will be all together:

Full group: Wednesdays, 2.30pm–5.30pm, at National Youth Theatre (Islington)

In the final week, you will come have a day of mentoring, a day of the Careers Fair at NYT, and a Progression Day at NYT.

Is this the right course for me?

The course is for 16–25-year-olds who are not in employment, education or training and live in the London boroughs of Barking & Dagenham, Bexley, Bromley, Enfield, Greenwich, Havering, Newham, Redbridge or Waltham Forest.

Places are only available to those who fulfil these eligibility criteria.

We welcome applications from care leavers and those whose challenging circumstances may have prevented them from completing Secondary School or FE education. We welcome applications from neurodiverse, disabled and learning disabled applicants. We also welcome applications from those who are refugees, asylum seekers or newly arrived migrants with the right to study in the UK.

Am I eligible for a free place?

Yes – all places are available free of charge to both NYT members and non-members who fulfil the eligibility criteria. All participants in the programme will receive a free NYT Hub Membership on our website. Travel bursaries will be provided for all workshops outside of your local borough.

What should I expect during the NYT Emerge Programme?

This course focuses on developing confidence and communication skills through drama, exploring career paths in the creative industries, and developing the skills and aspirations of participants to transition to a creative working environment.

Each participant will develop their CV, be provided with awareness of opportunities with the National Youth Theatre and wider organisations, and be matched with a one-to-one mentor for at least one hour of mentoring time. Throughout the course, participants will receive a travel bursary for workshops outside of their borough.

Through visiting tutors and the Careers Fair, the course offers access to industry professionals and has a strong focus on progression routes for learners on completion.

How many people take part?

The Emerge Collective will be made up of at least 24 young people, 8 in each of the borough groups: Barking and Dagenham, Newham and Greenwich.

What happens after the course?

Following your completion of Emerge we will recommend progression routes within the National Youth Theatre, and direct you towards opportunities with our partner organisations. You will attend a Progression Day on 28th September where you will be considered for new opportunities at NYT.

National Youth Theatre would like to thank the following people and organisations for their support of Emerge:

The European Social Fund and the JGA Group. Distributed by the Education and Skills Funding Agency through the Community Grants Scheme, and managed by Groundwork London. Woolwich Works as the venue partner for Greenwich.

We would also like to thank our principal supporters Arts Council England.
