Spoken World | Submissions now open

Posted 22 Jul 2023 by Joe Duggan

Submissions are now open to Spoken World, National Youth Theatre’s new spoken word programme bringing together emerging and established artists to explore the ways poetry, theatre and performance interact.

We’re accepting original poetry and spoken word submissions around the theme of ‘The Countdown to Save Our World’, until Wednesday 15 May. From these submissions, we’ll be selecting a team of poets to join us as performers at Latitude Festival (18-21 July 2019), and create an original spoken word performance piece to be staged at the festival.

The Countdown to Save Our World

With reports declaring there are just 12 years to save the world from 'climate catastrophe', a generation of school children taking to the streets to protest, and an extinction rebellion on the horizon – the countdown to save our world has never been more prominent. We must act now, before it’s too late.

But along with the rising sea levels, is a rising threat that efforts to tackle countless other global, local, and human issues might fall to the wayside in the scramble to stop climate change.

What does the countdown to save our planet look like? Who does it leave behind? And are we already too late?

We’re looking for submissions of original spoken word pieces responding to the theme of ‘The Countdown to Save Our World’ and what it means to you. Be bold, be creative, and be daring - we actively encourage you to interrogate the theme and turn it on it's head! Your piece might be environmental, or something entirely different.

Your submission should be no more than 2 minutes in length, and should be performed and filmed.

Who can submit

Open to National Youth Theatre Company Members aged 18-25.
