Congratulations on your place at NYT!

Equality and inclusion are at the core of our charitable aims, and we are committed to working to remove economic, social or geographical barriers that might prevent young people from accessing our opportunities. Our Bursary Fund awards over £850k worth of support every year to ensure that financial barriers don’t prevent young people from engaging with our opportunities.

If you are interested in applying for a bursary for one of our intake courses, please read on for key dates, FAQs, and more.

Before applying, please also ensure that you have read the NYT Bursary Policy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I get a bursary for?

NYT offers three types of bursaries, covering course fees, accommodation fees, and travel costs. Participants on residential courses can apply for all three types of bursary; participants on non-residential courses can apply for course fees and travel costs.

We also award three levels of funding: 100% of fees, 50% of fees, and 30% of fees. You can specify the amount of funding you are requesting on your application form. Please note: due to the number of applications we receive, you may be awarded less funding than you have requested.

I’m not based in the UK - can I still apply for a bursary?

To apply for a bursary, you must be a UK resident with a UK-based address. Due to the funding bodies that NYT receives funds from, we are unfortunately unable to provide bursaries or fee waivers to those outside the UK.

What should I write in my personal statement?

In your personal statement, you should outline why you need support from the NYT Bursary Fund and provide more detail on the circumstances you have selected in your application.

Please don't worry about your statement being perfectly written - we just need to find out more about you and your circumstances. You will also have the opportunity to upload your statement as a video or voice recording if that is preferable.

What kind of evidence should I provide?

On your application form, you will be asked to select different circumstances that apply to your situation e.g. personal, living, financial, education, etc.

Where possible, we ask that you provide evidence to support each of the circumstances that you have selected. It greatly helps our allocation process when evidence is provided, and we strongly encourage you to supply as much evidence as you have access to.

Evidence could include (but is not limited to):

  • Letters, emails or text messages (e.g. from your doctor, school or college, local council, employer, bank)
  • Payslips or P60s
  • Tenancy agreements
  • Bank statements
  • Employment contracts
  • Benefits statements
  • Educational Healthcare Plan
  • Confirmation of student loan or scholarship

You may redact personal information, but the evidence should clearly demonstrate the claims you have made and support the circumstances you have declared in this application.

Any financial evidence (e.g. Universal Credit statements, bank statements, payslips) should be dated within the last 12 months.

I can't provide evidence - what should I do?

We understand that in some cases you may be unable to provide evidence. If this applies to you, there will be an opportunity on the application form to let us know why this is.

If you are unable to provide evidence, we also ask that you complete a reference form, which can be downloaded from the bottom of this page or the application form.

This should be completed by a working professional who knows you well and can verify your circumstances truthfully and accurately. Your referee should not be related to you and should be a person of good standing in your community, or work in (or be retired from) a recognised profession.

Do I need to complete a reference form?

NYT only requires a reference form if you are unable to provide evidence to support your application.

If successful, how will I receive my bursary?

Course fee bursaries are awarded in-kind. If your application is successful, the fee you are due to pay will be reduced. If applicable, you will be notified of the outstanding balance via email which can be paid through your NYT profile.

Should you be awarded a travel bursary, NYT will require your bank details to pay the funds directly to you. If you are applying for a travel bursary, you can include your bank details on your application form.
