We are excited to share that we have launched an Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) fully funded doctoral award with University of the Arts London and applications are now live!

In NYT's 70th anniversary year the PhD programme is titled Ensemble Theatre Making at National Youth Theatre: Histories, Practices and Possibilities. With the NYT's archive as a starting point, the programme looks firmly forwards and will look at contemporary archiving, practice working alongside NYT REP Company.

Working with NYT COO & Executive Director Karen Turner, Associate Director Anna Niland, Associate Artist Kane Husbands, Fred Meller and Helen Brooks at University of the Arts London, and Dr Erin Lee of the National Theatre Archives, the PhD programme is funded for 3.5 years covering fees and an annual stipend.

The PhD asks the question: How can the history and contemporary practice of National Youth Theatre be explored and activated to open new understandings of the organisation’s value and impact, that may shape future youth theatre and/or ensemble practices?

This project provides a unique opportunity to uncover and interrogate histories of ensemble practice through exploration of NYT’s uncatalogued archive; and to put this into dialogue with live research on, and documenting of, new productions, to inform future practices.

A proportion of the research will be undertaken on site at NYT’s award-winning creative production house in London, working with the largely undocumented archive material, and in rehearsal rooms/studios, including up to three new works each year of the PhD. National Theatre Archive will provide cutting edge archival mentoring and professional development opportunities.

Applications close on 11 May.
