NYT Emerge | Applications Open

Interested in drama and a career in the creative industries?

NYT Emerge is a free drama and careers programme for 16–25-year-olds who aren’t currently in work or education, and are based in the London boroughs of Barking & Dagenham, Bexley, Bromley, Enfield, Greenwich, Havering, Newham, Redbridge or Waltham Forest. The workshops will take place in Greenwich, Waltham Forest and Newham. 

Develop your ambitions with focused workshops, one-to-one mentoring and CV and interview guidance across two months in your borough and beyond.

Emerge is a two-month employability training programme, run by the National Youth Theatre in partnership with local creative organisations. It offers participants a clear and transparent breakdown of routes into the creative industries and key skills, with the programme culminating in a final careers fair at the National Youth Theatre.

Places are available to NYT Members and non-NYT Members. Workshops will be based around local venues to participants in each borough.

Is this the right course for me?

The course is for young people who are not in education, secure employment or training. Places are only available to those who fulfil the criteria stated. We welcome applications from care leavers and those whose challenging circumstances may have prevented them from completing Secondary School or FE education.

We welcome applications from neurodiverse, learning disabled and differently abled applicants. We also welcome applications from those who are refugees, asylum seekers or newly arrived migrants with the right to study in the UK. Emerge is delivered through funding from the European Social Fund.

Am I eligible for a free place?

Places are available free of charge to both NYT members and non-members. All participants in the programme will receive a free NYT Hub Membership on our website. Travel Bursaries will be provided for all workshops outside of your borough.

FAQs

What should I expect during the NYT Emerge Programme?

This course focuses on developing confidence and communication skills through drama, exploring career paths of the creative industries, and developing the skills and aspirations of participants to transition to a creative working environment. Each participant will develop their Personal CV, be provided with awareness of opportunities with the National Youth Theatre and wider organisations, and be matched with a one-to-one mentor for at least one hour of mentoring time. Throughout the course participants receive a travel bursary outside of their borough. Through visiting tutors and the careers fair, the course offers access to industry professionals and has a strong focus on progression routes for learners on completion.

When and where is the course?

The course runs from locations across all three boroughs including visits to National Youth Theatre's main space. All session dates and times are listed. Participants will receive travel bursaries to all locations outside of their borough.

How many people take part?

The Emerge Collective will be made up of at least 24 young people, 8 from each borough of Greenwich, Newham and Waltham Forest.

What happens after the course?

Following your completion of Emerge we will recommend progression routes within the National Youth Theatre, and to be directed towards opportunities with partner organisations.
